Top 5 VDiff climbs at Symonds Yat

Top 5 VDiff climbs at Symonds Yat

  • Snoozin’ Suzie
  • Traveller’s Rest
  • The Little Red Edge
  • The Seven Deadly Dwarves
  • Tea on a Rainy Day

Symonds Yat is situated in the heart of the Forest of Dean, and overlooks the river Wye. It is a village in the Wye Valley, and straddles Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.  And is only a few miles from Monmouthshire and the Welsh border.

Symonds Yat is a very popular climbing venue.  Most of the climbs are single pitch, and easily accessible from above and below.  It is renowned for its weathered juggier limestone.  So, if you are a strong climber, that prefers bigger moves, with the occasional questionable protection, this would be your playground.

Symonds Yat is home to some incredible lines.   You do need a good eye for gear placements at times, and sometimes a head for pushing on when fear tries to prevent you from progressing.

Here are my top 5 VDiff climbs at Symonds Yat, in no particular order.

Snoozin’ Suzie is one of Symonds Yat’s classic multipitch climbs. The climbing is very straightforward; on good holds, with stunning views.  Mountaineering adventure

Traveller’s Rest is a lovely route.  Lots of protection available, but sometimes. Have to look for it.

The Little Red Edge is very short, but worth climbing. Excellent holds, good protection, but it feels its over before you started.

The Seven Deadly Dwarves has a tricky start, then moves onto more straightforward climbing.

Tea on a Rainy Day is located just to the right of Insanity Cave, which already sounds ominous.  The climb follows an obvious corner crack, with an exhilarating move over the bulge. Just be aware, do not place your protection by the wedged block, look for the crack on the right, safer bet.

Here are my top 5 VDiffs at Symonds Yat.  If you would like some advice on any of the above routes, or others at Symonds Yat, please feel free to get in contact.  We would be happy to help.
